Mowing a modest-sized lawn does not require the same investment as maintaining a large hilly area. The price of an electric mower depends on specific parameters, and the bill does not stop at the checkout receipt. Understanding what affects the cost helps avoid unpleasant surprises, especially regarding the battery.

Real autonomy and hidden cost of the lithium-ion battery

The price displayed in stores only tells part of the story. On a battery-powered mower, the most expensive component to replace is the battery itself.

Let’s take a concrete example. A model sold with two 4 Ah batteries promises comfortable autonomy on paper. In real conditions, on wet grass or sloped terrain, users report only 15 to 20 minutes of effective use. The gap between theoretical autonomy and actual performance can be considerable.

Why this discrepancy? The motor works harder when the grass is tall, wet, or when the terrain requires climbing. The capacity in Ah and the voltage of the battery should therefore be chosen based on the real conditions of your land, not just its surface area.

For gardens exceeding 500 to 600 m², a second battery often becomes necessary. This additional cost, rarely mentioned in comparisons, can represent a significant part of the total budget. Comparing prices and quotes for an electric mower while including this item helps avoid underestimating the actual investment.

Wired or battery mower: what budget according to your garden

The two technologies do not serve the same purposes, and their price ranges reflect this difference.

Wired mower: the economical choice for small areas

The wired electric mower remains the cheapest option to purchase. It is suitable for small areas, close to a power outlet. No battery to replace, no loss of autonomy over the years. The annual maintenance cost is limited to sharpening the blade and possibly replacing the cable.

The main constraint is the extension cord, which limits the operating radius and complicates mowing around flower beds or trees.

Battery mower: more versatile, more expensive

The cordless mower offers complete freedom of movement. In return, the purchase price is higher, and the lithium-ion battery has a limited lifespan (generally a few years of regular use before a noticeable drop in performance).

Replacing a battery can cost almost as much as a new wired mower. This item should be included from the start in the five-year budget calculation.

Cutting width, motor, and mulching: what drives up the bill

Beyond the type of power source, three technical characteristics directly influence the price.

  • The cutting width determines the mowing speed. A model with a wider blade covers more area with each pass but costs more and weighs more.
  • The power of the motor determines the ability to cut dense or tall grass without straining. An undersized motor consumes more battery and wears out faster.
  • The mulching function finely shreds grass clippings and redistributes them on the lawn. It eliminates the need for a collection bag and nourishes the grass. Models with integrated mulching are slightly more expensive but remove the cost and hassle of disposing of green waste.

A large-capacity collection bag also adds a few dozen euros to the price. For a small garden, a modest bag is sufficient. On a large lawn, a bag that is too small requires frequent trips to empty it.

Repairability index: a long-term price criterion

Have you noticed the small rating displayed on some product sheets? The repairability index, mandatory in France for several categories of devices, assesses the ease of repairing a product on a scale of 10.

Some cordless mowers already display this rating. A model with a high index (for example, 7.6/10 for a Fuxtec mower) means that spare parts are available and that repair remains accessible. A good repairability index reduces the risk of complete replacement after a few seasons.

Conversely, a cheap model without available parts can become waste at the first malfunction. The low purchase price then turns into an additional cost if the machine needs to be completely replaced.

Used electric mower: traps to be aware of

Buying used seems logical to reduce the budget. For a wired mower, the risk remains limited: the motor is simple, and breakdowns are rare.

With a battery mower, the situation changes. The battery is the most sensitive component to wear, even before the motor or safety devices. A degraded battery may last only a few minutes, rendering the device almost unusable.

Professionals in the gardening industry recommend testing the battery before any used purchase. Without this test, it is impossible to know if the remaining autonomy justifies the asking price. A device sold at half price with a battery at the end of its life is not a good deal.

The choice of an electric mower rarely hinges solely on the catalog price. The battery, repairability, and real usage conditions weigh as much, if not more, than the initial price. Taking the time to calculate the cost over several seasons remains the best way to avoid a disappointing purchase.
